1. Introduction and background – A study of the spiritual impact of watching horror movies
Let us go back to the last time you saw a horror movie.
As the scary scenes unfolded, accompanied by eerie music, you may recall your hair standing on end, a faster heart rate accompanied by gasps, reaching out and clutching your partner’s hand, covering your face or placing your forefingers in your ears to dampen the sound. We have all experienced what happens to us mentally and the relief and nervous laughter when we walk out of the theatre.
However, most of us are not aware of the spiritual impact that horror movies have on us.
Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalay and Spiritual Science Research Foundation conducted a study to explore the subtle or spiritual impact of watching horror movies on our auras.
2. Set-up of the experiment to study the spiritual effect of horror movies
17 participants, over two show screenings (afternoon and evening sessions), took part in a spiritual research experiment to study the subtle effect of watching a horror movie on the audience.
We asked 17 people from the Spiritual Research Centre and Ashram to watch a popular horror movie. To understand the spiritual impact of watching a film from the horror genre, we created a theatre-type environment in our studio for their viewing experience. Also, we usually order popcorn and other eatables when we see a movie. We wanted to understand what is the impact of a horror movie’s subtle vibrations on such eatables we consume during a movie. To study this aspect, we also placed some popular snacks near the movie screen, such as popcorn, water and cola drinks.
To analyse and measure the subtle or spiritual impact of the horror movie, we used an instrument known as the Universal Aura Scanner or UAS, the GDV Bio-well and the sixth sense of the spiritual research team members. We took aura readings of the audience before and after watching the movie.
- The UAS was used to measure changes in the auras of the audience before and after seeing the movie. The UAS can detect any changes in positivity or negativity in a person’s aura.
- The GDV Bio-well measured changes in a participant’s subtle energy state and the chakras(subtle energy centres).
3. Key findings from the experiment to study the spiritual effect of horror movies
1. An increase in negativity and a reduction in positivity
a. Firstly, the negativity in all the participants’ auras increased across the board. The average increase in the negativity of the auras of the participants was 107%, which is more than double, with some participants seeing increases of as much as 375%.
b. The negativity in the food items increased by 113%, with negative auras averaging 20 metres. Imagine ingesting such food items and their effect on one’s consciousness.
c. Some participants had a positive aura before watching the horror movie. The positivity in their auras was reduced by 60% on average after watching the movie. In some cases, these participants lost all the positivity in their auras.
d. In the audience were two participants who were Saints. Saints are those with a very advanced spiritual level (70% and above). There are just a few thousand people on Earth at this spiritual level. The auras of these 2 Saints extended beyond 475 meters. After watching the movie, the negativity in their auras did increase, but the positivity in their auras was hardly affected. It indicates that when one is of an advanced spiritual level, one retains the positivity in one’s aura regardless of the external stimulus or the circumstances that one is in.
2. How long did the negativity last after watching the horror movie?
The negative effect lingered in the audience after they watched the movie. We requested that all subjects return the following morning to be measured again. The results showed that their auras had not yet come back to normal. In fact, on average, the negativity in their auras was 55% more than before they saw the movie.
3. Effect of the Scare Factor of a horror movie on one’s aura
We asked the audience to rate the movie’s scariness on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the scariest.
Graph : Perceived scariness of horror movies by the audience and the effect on their auras
- As you can see from this table, even those who said they did not find it that scary (i.e., who perceived the movie scariness a 3 or 4 out of 10) showed higher increases in negativity in their auras as compared to those who found it scary.
- Paradoxically, the person in the audience who gave the movie the least scary score, a 3 out of 10, had the maximum increase in the negativity in her aura, which was 375%.
- Two of the participants had seen the movie before. They knew in advance what was coming in the film, and according to them, they were less scared. Even so, they recorded, on average, a 102% increase in their negative aura. Even if we feel that ‘I did not get scared’, ‘I am cool, I don’t get affected by horror movies’, or ‘I have seen this movie before, and I know what is coming next’, these aura readings tell a different story. Beyond the psychological feeling, a lot more happens at a subtle vibrational level, which most of us are unaware of but affects our auras adversely.
4. Do show timings affect the impact of a horror movie on the audience?
In the experiment, we had two shows with separate participants, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. Now, the UAS measures two types of negativities in a person’s aura. The first one, IR, stands for Infrared and indicates a more general class of negative vibrations. In contrast, the second, called UV or ultraviolet, is generally associated with a more severe possibility of affliction by negative energies.
How show timings can affect the impact of horror movies on the audience
We found that the participants of both shows had similar increases in general negativity, i.e., IR. However, those who attended the evening show had a 112% increase in the second type of negativity (UV) compared to 31% for those who participated in the afternoon show. These readings correlate with the rest of our research, which shows that the effect of negative energies multiplies after dusk.
5. Impact of horror movies on the chakras (Subtle energy centres)
We also obtained a number of reports from the Bio-Well GDV about the energy field of one of the participants in the experiment. We would like to share with you how the Bio-Well GDV detected the effect of watching a horror movie on the Kundalini chakras (subtle energy centres) in the participants.
According to the instrument, when chakras shift left or right, it can be related to inner emotional reactions or the response to the surroundings. Ideally, the chakras should be aligned, and this is generally observed in a person who is involved in daily spiritual practice and mental training.
State of the chakras of a participant before and after watching a horror movie as analysed by the Bio-Well GDV
The above picture is a snapshot of the person’s chakras before and after watching the horror movie. As you can see (in the picture on the left), there is a general alignment of the chakras and their size is much larger, which indicates balance, stability and more energy. The second picture on the right is a snapshot of the person’s chakras after watching the movie. Apart from being totally misaligned, they have also become smaller, indicating instability and an overall reduction in energy.
Energy imbalance before and after watching a horror movie
For the same subject, the Bio-Well GDV picked up a significant energy imbalance increase in the organs, i.e., from 1 organ to 15 organs showing high imbalance after watching the movie.
6. Findings through the medium of advanced sixth sense
With such instruments (mentioned above) one can objectively see the effect of a stimulus such as a horror movie.
However, the true nature of the subtle impact of such a movie can only be understood through the medium of advanced sixth sense. In our team, we have members who can visually perceive the subtle vibrations, and by drawing them, they serve as spiritual X-rays, showing us the actual impact of a horror movie on the audience.
Subtle picture of how horror movies affect your spiritual and mental health
What the artist saw was from the screen showing the horror movies; waves and particles of distressing energy went out and enveloped the audience. This clouded their thinking, and there was an illusory hypnotic effect compelling the person to watch more. It also destabilised the viewer’s chakras which are subtle energy centres supplying subtle vital energy to one’s organs. This subtle reading matched the Bio-Well GDV results mentioned above.
4. Conclusion
Interest in horror movies shows a steady rise from a 2.69% box office share in 2014, jumping to 12.75% in 2021. (Neilchasefilm.com, 2023)
A recent Deloitte study showed that US consumers overall rank comedy, drama, and action as their top three favourite genres for video content. However, for Gen Z (people born between 1996 and 2010), while comedy is still a strong first (48%) and action is second (29%), horror is a very close third (28%). (Deloitte.com, 2022)
It is disturbing that our younger generation is gravitating towards the horror movie genre. Interest in horror movies will continue to impact other related video content, like video games. Younger generations who watch horror films will likely become horror gaming enthusiasts, too.
If 2023’s videogame sales charts are anything to go by, the answer is “horror games”. (BBC, 2023)
Immersive technologies will only increase the effect of the horror genre on the auras of the audience and gaming enthusiasts. Ideally, entertainment should result in positivity for the good of humanity.
It is necessary that we educate society and parents to limit the uptake of the horror entertainment genre as it has many negative spiritual side effects that have far-reaching impacts on our psyches and spiritual states.
